About the choir

We are a mixed voice chamber choir based in Epsom, Surrey.

The choir gives three or four concerts each year, mostly in the church of St Martin of Tours, Epsom, making the most of the superb acoustic of Epsom’s largest historical building.

We aim for the highest standards and have the reputation of being one of Surrey's leading choirs.

We sing a very wide range of music, both sacred and secular, from masses and motets to madrigals and part songs by composers from Bach to Bernstein, Tallis to Tavener, and Mozart to Mäntyjärvi. We also have several composers in the choir whose music we perform. Most recently we sang a Christmas piece by Peter Burton which is available to view in the media section of this website.

The choir usually performs unaccompanied, but also works from time to time with small groups, including Baroque ensembles, bands or instrumentalists. Recent performances include Howells’ Requiem, Alec Roth’s A Time to Dance, Shearing’s Songs and Sonnets and Dove’s The Passing of the Year. Other composers whose works we perform regularly include Vaughan Williams, Eric Whitacre, Will Todd and James MacMillan.

We support the performance of new music and music by women composers, including the music of Owain Park, Paul Mealor, Cecilia McDowell, and sisters Lili and Nadia Boulanger. We also aim to book young aspiring music professionals to perform with us as soloists.

Since the choir was formed back in 1969 we have performed at venues as varied as St James’ Piccadilly and the Ritz hotel, as well as singing services in a number of cathedrals including St Paul’s, St Alban’s, Rochester and, of course, Guildford.

We have also toured abroad occasionally and are hoping to arrange a trip to Europe in the near future. We hold a Come & Sing afternoon annually which has become a popular event with our supporters.

Epsom Chamber Choir were not deterred by the pandemic but were able to enjoy singing together on the tennis courts at Epsom College, and subsequently produced a socially distanced Christmas concert for our followers to enjoy on Youtube. Choir numbers were back to full strength after Covid and audience sizes have since increased.

If you have choral experience, good sight-reading and are committed to high standards, please contact us using the “Contact us” link on this website. We rehearse on Thursday evenings during term time in Epsom. Admission to the choir is by audition.

Epsom Chamber Choir is a Registered Charity number 1026721.

We are affiliated to Making Music.

The choir is very grateful for the continuing support of The Humphrey Richardson Taylor Charitable Trust.
