CHOIR NEWS

Bach for the Marsden
We were very pleased that our June concert in support of the Royal Marsden Cancer Campaign raised over £4,000. Many thanks to everyone who gave their time to make it such a great success.

You can tell a choir by the company it keeps.
Though by no means the first time of sharing a concert platform, it was a great pleasure to be joined for our last concert ,‘On the Lighter side’, by the female voices of ‘Impromptu.’ Comparing our music making prompted much discussion by both choir and audience on how different choirs can be, not only in the way they sound but also the way they approach and rehearse the music they sing. Suffice to say ECC members were mightily impressed with Impromptu and we wish them every success in the final of BBC Radio 3 Choir of the Year Competition. For our Christmas concert on 13 December we will be joined by the youthful voices of King’s College Junior School Choir. Michael Stevenson is a member of the music staff at the Wimbledon based school so we know that we all will be in for a musical treat.

Recording Artists
During November we are recording all the ‘Lighter Side’ music we performed in October. We have put aside a large chunk of a weekend to spend in St Martin’s Church with our recording engineer (and tenor) Chris Graver to try to ensure the best ‘takes’ possible. We hope to release the CD in the New Year. Watch this space.

Christmas is coming…
Christmas always arrives early for choirs with the carol books and other seasonal pieces coming out of the cupboards even before the Christmas lights are up. Our concert at St Martin’s in December is just one of four we regularly sing. We are privileged to be invited each year to give a concert on two consecutive evenings in early December at the National Trust’s house at Clandon. We also sing for guests at the RAC Club in Epsom and these occasions help provide vital funding for the Choir.

Introducing…..
After a number of years of wise and gentle guidance under our Chair, Beth Hill, the baton has now been handed over to a new Chair, Jack Foster. Jack has been ‘promoted’ from being our highly efficient Treasurer. He has sung tenor with the choir for the past 10 years and sings also with a choir at University College London where he is Director of Special Projects. Jack is father to three children aged 21, 19 and 17 and when not occupied with either them, UCL or ECC he likes nothing better than to go out for a long walk and hunt fungi to bring back for supper.

And finally - do you sing?
Or do you know any good singers? We have vacancies for sopranos and basses and would be delighted to invite interested singers to join us for a rehearsal. Call 01372 729422 to find out more.

ABOUT THE CHOIR

We are a choir of about 35 voices based in Epsom, Surrey where we give at least six major concerts each year, mostly in our regular venue of St Martin's Church.

Our repertoire encompasses composers as different as 'Fats' Waller and Arvo Pärt and pieces that have just been written as well as the classics.

Amongst our many engagements we help the National Trust to raise funds at Clandon Park and from time to time sing Evensong in cathedrals such as St Paul's, Winchester, Southwark and, most recently, Ely in February 2008.

We also tour abroad. In May 2008 we visited Lille where we sang in the Cathedral of Notre Dame de la Treille.

The choir has won Enterprise Awards on three occasions from the Performing Right Society.

Epsom Chamber Choir, which was formed in 1969, is a Registered Charity number 1026721 and is affiliated to Making Music.
